new exercise to reduce ataxia |
|
This activity not only improves turning ability but also is effective in reducing ataxia. This is an ideal way to practice and foster a wide based turning technique. Many people lose balance when they turn because they attempt to “cross over” rather than take a wide based turning approach. The way this activity is designed, the only way to turn is by lifting the leading leg to step onto the step. If the person attempts to cross over, they will be unable to make the turn. Repeatedly practicing results in improved tuning ability. In clients with ataxia, the only type of activity that is shown to reduce ataxia are those that make the affected extremity responsible for postural control. Because this activity involves stepping up, at an angle, on each leg, it is effective in reducing ataxia. www.neurolasticinstitute.com
