Canelo Alvarez VS Billy Joe Saunders 2021: The fight between the Mexican champion Saul Canelo Alvarez and the British champion Billy Joe Saunders was confirmed to have been agreed for May 2021. The fight will most likely take place in either Texas or Las Vegas on may the 8th of 2021.

The british boxer, Billy Joe Saunders, is currently 31 years old and maintains a perfect professional record of 30 victories, 14 of them being by way of knockout. Saunders is the current WBO super middleweight champion of the world. Title that he acquired in 2015 and has maintained since then by defending his belt a total of 7 times.

The second reason would be the 2 fight deal Canelo has made with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing. This deal includes Canelo’s fight against Yilidirim, and a second fight against a Matchroom Boxing fighter, in this case the fighter being Billy Joe Saunders. So Canelo Promotions would be co promoting alongside Matchroom Boxing the Canelo Vs Yildirim fight in february and the Canelo VS Saunders fight in may.

Out of Saunders’ record, the names that most stand out are: Chris Eubank Jr, David Lemiuex, Andy Lee, among some others.

His last fight was on December 4, 2020 against Martin Murray. The bout ended by way of a unanimous decision where Saunders won with a large margin of advantage on the judges' scorecards.

One of my favorite knockouts of 2019 was actually Billy Joe Saunders’ knockout over the argentinian Marcelo Esteban Coceres. The fight seemed to be quite close all the way through, or at least we could see that Saunders was having a hard time dealing with Coceres. But it was in the 11th round when Saunders connected the most beautiful uppercut i;ve seen in a while and sent Coceres down.

And even though Saunders has crazy knockouts on his record, like that one I just mentioned, the truth is he isn’t known for his power. With 14 knockouts out of 30 wins, we would be talking about a 47% knockout percentage which most people would argue isn’t very high. But once again, Saunders’ good at being elusive and defending well. Those are the strengths that he will need against Canelo, and if I'm honest I think being able to avoid getting hit is a much better weapon to have over hard punching power against Canelo. We have seen Canelo do somewhat well against hard punchers like Golovkin, Smith, Kovalev, but we have seen him struggle against elusive fighters like Mayweather, and Lara. So, I think Saunders does have some tools that could possibly work against the mexican champion.

Something I have noticed after watching a few fights from Saunders, is that he tends to do better when his opponents are the ones going forward and being aggressive. When Saunders fights going backwards he seems to do way better by avoiding punches and counterpunching his opponents, compared to when he is the one moving forward looking to engage with the other boxer.

So, if I had to guess. The fight between Saunders and Canelo will probably consist of Canelo going forward like he did against Smith, while Saunders is moving backwards trying to counterpunch. The difference between Saudners and SMith is that Saunders is way better at fighting going backwards than Smith, so I would argue that Saunders could do a better job than Smith did against Canelo.

Another point to take into account is that since this fight has already been agreed on, Saunders will have plenty of time to train and prepare properly for it. This time there shouldn't be a single excuse from anyone saying that Canelo’s opponent didn’t have enough time to have a good training camp, because that wouldn’t be true at all.

As I previously mentioned, his last opponent was the british Callum Smith, who at the time was the WBA super-middleweight world champion. I think most people who watched the fight would agree with me when I say that Canelo pretty much fought a perfect fight and left everyone impressed with how dominant he was over his opponent.

I think that fight against Smith marks the point in which we can safely say that Canelo has finally reached the prime of his career, meaning that I believe that it will be extremely difficult for anyone to beat the mexican for the next 3 or 4 years.

At this point we have already watched Canelo fight with different styles in different fights, adapting to what he thinks would work best against a certain opponent. We saw him be a counter puncher against Golovkin in his first fight, and when he saw that that didn’t work he switched to much more aggressive style for the rematch.
