Tank around the world are upgrading to next level with the addition of active protection system Companies from several countries, including the U.S., Germany, Britain, China, Ukraine and South Korea, are currently developing or testing APS. Before we start what type of APS are around the world let’s discuss what active protection system is. It is a protection shield that uses sensors, tracking radar, launchers and countermeasure munitions to defeat and/or deflect anti-tank guided missiles and rocket-propelled grenades away from combat vehicles. APS technology enhances force protection and survivability, especially when combined with a passive armor protection system.
An active protection system is a system designed to prevent line-of-sight guided anti-tank missiles and projectiles from destroying a target. There are two types of APS Soft kill and hard kill. The soft kill is more an Electronic countermeasures that alter the electromagnetic, IR or other signature of a protected vehicle thereby altering the sensing behavior of an incoming projectile. While hard-kill measure physically counterattack an incoming threat in such a way that its effect is reduced or eliminated. In this video we will go through different active protection systems which are service around the world.
Other countries are also developing APS for their armor vehicles including china working on GL5 Active Protection System, Ukraine developing zaslon APS while German company Develop Advanced Modular Armor Protection ADS Gen 3.
In 20th century ERA and Soft Kill active protection systems were enough to counter anti-tank threats and most of the tanks around the globe were equip with these systems but in late 90s proliferation of ATGM missiles to insurgent and rebel create a new type of battle field for armored units.
Further third generation ATGMs are fire and forget and have top attacking regime in addition most of the missiles are equipped with tandem warhead which can easily defeat ERA.
