Cape Town - Thembinkosi Lorch was the big winner at the Premier Soccer League’s glittering awards banquet in Durban on Sunday night, making partial amends for Orlando Pirates’ heart-breaking loss to Mamelodi Sundowns in the Absa Premiership title race this season.

The 25-year-old attacking midfielder scooped the PSL Footballer of the Season and Absa Premiership Player’s Player of the Season gongs for a great personal impression during a season which ended with his side being pipped to the league crown on the last day of the season.

He edged out the Sundowns duo of Themba Zwane and Hlompho Kekana for the prestigious individual awards, although Kekana did not go home empty-handed as he was voted Absa Premiership Midfielder of the Season among other awards for the Sundowns crew.

In a campaign that also saw him rise to the Bafana Bafana level, Lorch scored nine goals and made five assists, for a 31% involvement in all Pirates’ goals in the league.

The Footballer of the Season award was voted exclusively by the 16 coaches in the Premiership, while the Player’s Player was voted by players, but players were not allowed to vote for their team-mates.

Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane expectedly won the Absa Premiership Coach of the Season for the second year in a row after guiding Sundowns to a successful defence of the Premiership title.

SuperSport United’s Teboho Mokoena won the Young Player of the Season award, while his team-mate Ronwen Williams was named Goalkeeper of the Season and the referee’s honour went to Abongile Tom.

The Orlando Pirates attacking midfielder had an incredible season under Micho Sredojevic, and he deserves all the praise coming his way. Lorch, who has been playing in the elite league for four seasons now, finds himself on nine goals from 26 league games.
Quiet on the pitch, Lorch let his feet do the talking, and it's unfortunate that Pirates finished the season empty-handed despite all the hard work. Lorch is a winger by trade, but it was at No.10 where he really flourished for the Sea Robbers, and he was often mistaken for a striker as he showed no signs of slowing down.
Thembinkosi Lorch has had quite a season. Since returning to Orlando Pirates from his loan spell with Chippa United, his star has been on the rise. Not bad going for a player who was slogging it out with Maluti College just a few seasons ago.

Nominated for four gongs at the 2019 PSL Awards (Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Season, Midfielder of the Season and TKO Player of the Season), he’s unlikely to finish the season empty-handed, unlike his club.
Lorch dedicated his nominations to his teammates.
“I am pleased with the nominations. This is an honour and reward for all the hard work that one has put in throughout the season. I would also like to thank my teammates because without them I wouldn’t have this recognition. These nominations are much theirs as they are mine because football is not a one-man game, the team makes the individual not the other way around,” Lorch told Pirates’ official website when the list of nominees was announced.
