Blinded by the Fight: Social Psychology & Political Polarization

video thumbnail
Presentation by Mark Horowitz, PhD at the Secular Hub, Denver.

We live in polarized times. As red and blue states fracture and political discourse turns increasingly hostile, sober analysis of the left/right divide is needed more than ever. How can the President be seen by some as a savvy businessman with the courage to take on a corrupt political system, while others see a narcissist-in-chief whose buffoonery would be laughable if not so dangerous? Why is the contrast in perception so sharp on issue after issue, from climate change to immigration, MeToo to Judge Kavanaugh? In a wide-ranging discussion, Dr. Mark Horowitz will demonstrate that the left/right divide runs much deeper than political philosophy. Indeed, liberals and conservatives differ not just in politics but in personality; not just in beliefs but in cognitive styles, characteristic emotions, and even food and leisure pursuits. Come hear Dr. Horowitz discuss why we see the world so differently and what this could mean for our ability to achieve progress in our fractured country and around the world.

Dr. Horowitz is an associate professor of sociology at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey. He teaches and carries out research in the areas of social theory, social psychology and political economy. Dr. Horowitz comes out of a background of social justice activism with a longstanding commitment to working-class unity and a revitalized labor movement. He is troubled by identity politics on the left and right and hopes his work might contribute to fostering critical thinking and “turning down the temperature” in the political arena.
