2021 Florida Legislature: Reviewing the Challenges Ahead

video thumbnail
The American Atheists are organizing in Florida to monitor and respond to the state legislature. Join Alison Gill, Vice President for Legal and Policy at American Atheists and Dr. Devon Graham, President of Humanists of Tallahassee and American Atheists' Florida Assistant State Director as they review the upcoming session. Being engaged members of the political and electoral process will diminish the bias against our community, advance evidence-based public policy, protect the secular character of our government, and increase our political clout.

Alison will provide a brief overview on statewide laws and policies that affect religious equality and the separation of religion. Devon and Alison will then share details on specific upcoming bills, discuss how Florida's American Atheists plan to respond as well as provide information on how people can help out.

Alison Gill manages American Atheists’ federal and state advocacy for religious equality and litigation activities to protect the separation of religion and government. Alison is a nationally recognized expert on civil rights law and state advocacy. Prior to her work with American Atheists, Alison worked as a consultant to nonprofits focusing on advocacy strategy and systemic change and as Senior Legislative Counsel at the Human Rights Campaign, where she managed state-level advocacy on issues such as conversion therapy, bullying prevention, education discrimination, health and wellness, youth homelessness, and data collection.

Dr. Devon Graham was raised just outside of Pittsburgh in an evangelical Christian household, the grasp of which she has only freed herself from in 2016. With a Ph.D. in Toxicology from the University of Maryland, she is currently a faculty member at a nearby unnamed university researching the development and treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders. She is the President of Humanists of Tallahassee and an Assistant State Director for American Atheists.
