29 years ago the #NorthridgeEarthquake shook Los Angeles (Northridge) at 4:30 in the morning. The 6.6 magnitude earthquake destroyed several structures, killed more than 50 Angelenos, injured thousands, and set off several natural-gas fires throughout Los Angeles County. On this anniversary we take the time to mourn those who lost their lives and honor the brave men and women that did not hesitate to help rescue others trapped in the rubble.

One lesson we learned after Northridge is that better seismic building codes were needed - and older buildings needed to be seismically retrofitted to avoid collapse during an earthquake. As of October 2022, the city of Los Angeles reports that over 8,000 vulnerable "soft story" buildings have been retrofitted.
