A magnitude 7.1 earthquake has caused extensive damage in China’s western Xinjiang region.

Despite the strength of the quake, just six people were injured in the sparsely populated area.

The earthquake hit the Uchturpan county in the Aksu prefecture in the early hours of the morning.

Around 1,000 emergency workers were on the scene by midday.
