Making a comeback is a punishing challenge. In the entertainment business, it is extremely difficult, if not utterly impossible. But the Bee Gees beat ASTRONOMICAL ODDS by mounting a successful comeback not once, not twice but an amazing THREE times and on the third comeback they had to do it twice.. once in the UK and then again in American with two different songs. Barry Gibb, Maurice Gibb and Robin Gibb were the biggest band in the world and then Vanished from the charts for a decade. They didn’t have a hit for 10 years! The ruled the 70s with the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack with hits like Staying Alive and How Deep Is Your Love and then were pushed out by tastemakers but their hit You Win Again gave them a #1 hit in 1987 in the Uk and One a top 10 in America in 1989.

"Fame….."what you get is no tomorrow…""Fame….what you need.. you have to borrow.” Lyrics from the late great David Bowie. Bowie knew about the fickle nature of fame all too well.
He certainly had his share of trying to move 'up the down escalator' throughout his colorful career. What is vogue today can easily be out of favor with the public in the blink of an eye. The entertainment business is more volatile than any other industry, there’s no question about that.

The biggest pop group of the 70s, The Bee Gees, were seemingly at an untouchable apex in ’79, but by the start of the 80s, they were yesterday’s news, and radio shunned them like lepers… As Barry Gibb stated, when you become famous, you think it’s never going to change, and people will always love you…But, it’s simply not true."

Labeled as a “disco band” and overplayed ad nauseam, Barry, Robin and Maurice went from the standard of popularity to the punchline for repugnance. This episode is not about their much-chronicled fall from the top… It’s about the incredible, unparalleled resolve of 3 musicians that used the power of their brotherly bond to revive their career in triumphant fashion THREE TIMES.

The first comeback by The Bee Gees was in ’71, when the Brothers Gibb reunited after an 18 month breakup where the press proclaimed that The Bee Gees had broken up…permanently! The single that returned The Bee Gees to glory was “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” a smash ballad that not only topped the Billboard Hot 100, it also reunified the brotherhood of Robin & Barry.

The Bee Gees 2nd comeback came, ironically, after the success of “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.” The group was labeled as a sappy “ballad band,” and with the burgeoning dance & R&B infused pop scene coming on strong, the Gibbs were passé and were exiled to ‘oldies’ dinner clubs. The single that brought The Bee Gees back was “Jive Talkin,” a complete departure that shocked the world and shot to #1 in ’75. We covered that one a few months ago.
