The Volkswagen ID.3 is as important to VW as the Beetle and the Golf. It's the German firm's first bespoke electric car and could really shake up the small family electric car class, especially with its cool looks, quality cabin and decent range.

But in order for it to make a splash, it's a good idea to compare it to the car that started the whole trend for family hatchback EVs. The Leaf concept is now 10 years old and while the latest one – launched in 2017 – may have lost some of the original car's sparkle, it's still a benchmark.
