It was German rock pioneer Rudolf Schenker who founded The Scorpions in Hanover, Germany, way back in 1965.

Rudolf’s tenacity as a guitarist, and his entrepreneurial drive guided the band into a period of 14 year period- between 1979 and 1993, when Scorpions were one of the most formidable hard rock bands in the world. The venomous sting of Scorpions musical attack shot through your bloodstream when you heard such bangers as “Another Piece of Meat”, “The Zoo”, "No one Like You,” “Blackout” and of course “Rock You Like a Hurricane.”

The group’s fearless nature, led by Schenker, magnified to a whole new level of intensity when the formative lineup took shape in the 70s: there was Schenker on lead guitar Klaus Meine my-nuh glass-shattering lead vocals Herman Rarebell (maribelle) on drums And Francis Buchholz (boohk- holtz)- on bass and backing vocals
The Scorpions lived by the adage that ‘rules were made to be broken.’That bold attitude propelled the music they created, and the locations they chose for their live tours.

In 1988, the Scorpions became one the first bands to play in the Soviet Union- during an uneasy period with rumblings of insurrection at the height of the Cold War. Most artists had no interest in playing behind the Iron Curtain, but for the Scorpions... it was their destiny to do it. The Scorps were allowed to play multiple gigs in Leningrad after first being denied the chance to play in Moscow by Soviet authorities.

The Soviet government was afraid of potential rioting between Russian citizens, and people representing many nationalities from Eastern Europe that lived in the capital city at the time.
The band returned in ’89 as one of the performing acts at the Moscow Music Peace Festival- dubbed the “Woodstock of the USSR."
