Sephardic Jews of Barbados |
|
There is a wealth of published information about the early British history of the Caribbean island of Barbados and its sugar industry. Considerably less has been published about the three century Sephardic history. This week's speaker, Simon Kreindler, will tell the story of the island's Sephardic community, and discuss some of its fascinating members.
In 2017, Simon published “Peddlers All, Stories of the First Ashkenazi Jewish Settlers in Barbados”, a compilation of the stories of the forty Ashkenazi Jewish families who managed to escape Europe before WWII and find safety in Barbados. Researching “Peddlers All” prompted his interest in the island's Sephardic history. In 2022, he published “The Sephardi Jews of Barbados 1627-1934.” Simon Kreindler was born and grew up in Barbados. After completing high school there, he did an undergraduate degree at McGill University in Montreal and graduated from McGill’s medical school in 1965. Following his postgraduate training in adult and child psychiatry in the USA in 1971, he returned to Canada and was in private practice in Toronto until his retirement in 2019.
