Brendan Fraser's career has seen both great success and periods of obscurity. However, on Sunday he celebrated his finest hour by winning the Best Actor Oscar for his role in "The Whale". Fraser's journey to the Oscars began with a six-minute standing ovation for his transformative performance in Darren Aronofsky's film at its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival in September of last year. Despite some controversy surrounding his casting and the film's portrayal of morbid obesity, Fraser received over 20 lead actor prizes from critics' groups, including the Critics' Choice Association, and won the Screen Actors Guild Award, which is a reliable Oscar precursor. Although Fraser has worked steadily in television and smaller movies in recent years, he had not starred in a major theatrical release since "Extraordinary Measures" in 2010 with Harrison Ford. Prior to that, he had leading roles in various successful films such as the "Mummy" franchise, "Journey to the Center of the Earth," "Crash," which won the Best Picture award, "Gods and Monsters," "George of the Jungle," and many others.
