Cognitive Bias, Why You’re Rightfully Wrong | Yaqine Saada | TEDxClearLakeHighSchool

When my family and I moved to the United States a few months ago, we had to buy an essential household item: mattresses. When walking into the store, the spokesperson asked a barrage of questions and ultimately convinced us to buy 5 mattresses. Now, when we walked into a store to find sheets, we discovered the same mattresses for much less but my dad said "They were the same". This demonstrates cognitive bias in its full form. In this speech, we’ll be discussing the history of cognitive bias, the types of cognitive bias, and how to lead a life without the influence of these dangerous cognitive biases. When quarantine came as a surprise, Yaqine discovered that she’s always been interested in unpacking the brain’s functions and in understanding the reasons behind the most overlooked neural mechanics. In her free time, she finds comfort in podcasts about human behavior as well as articles on survival heuristics. She constantly applies this curiosity throughout her personal and academic life to master speedy mental arithmetic calculations in international competitions, travel internationally to take part in large exhibitions, winning awards in top categories of Model UN conferences, and become vice-president of a large cultural exchange program under UNICEF. Yaqine hopes to spread understanding of the power and capabilities of the human mind. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
