Here are my Negative Painting Step by Step Tutorial, suitable for beginners and useful for more seasoned painters! 😊😉 I demonstrate here the technique on a simple tea bag, which makes such a nice still life painting, for such a simple subject! Watercolor is magic! 😁 Hopefully, using the watercolor techniques I am sharing here, you will be able to improve your painting drastically to make your subject stand out. The negative painting technique is really efficient for that! 😃 Splatters, loose painting with wet in wet fusing, prepare to have fun painting and watching!! 😆

Here are my Negative Painting Watercolor Tutorial Steps :
1. Pick a light subject or put it in front on a darker background.
2. Study the outline at the top of your subject, check how its silhouette is.
3. Pick a color for the background. Be creative with the background color! A complementary color of the one of your subject is a nice choice. Pick enough color and water in your brush so that the wash stays wet while you are working on the negative painting.
4. Hold your brush upside down or horizontally to define the top of your subject using the tip of your brush.
5. Correct and refine the outline while it’s still wet. But don’t fiddle!
6. Define the outline at the bottom too while everything is still wet.
7. Touch the edges of your wash and keep filling the background with paint, quickly.
8. Add a stronger stroke underneath the subject for the shadow.
9. Let it dry if needed then add a really light wash in some parts of your subject to create volume and add details but always keeping some white especially at the top of the subject.
10. Add a few finishing touches but resist overworking and pay attention not to kill your white!
