Trudeau says "fight" with India is not something Canada wants right now

video thumbnail
Speaking from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. on Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that India had violated the Vienna Convention, the 1961 United Nations (UN) agreement that protects diplomatic officers, by threatening to strip Canadian emissaries and their family members of their diplomatic immunity last month. The escalation prompted Global Affairs to direct 41 of its diplomats and their dependents to leave the country.

"That is of concern to countries around the world," Trudeau said, adding that the stakes of the dispute are high. "If a given country can just decide that the diplomats of another country are no longer protected, that makes international relations more dangerous and more serious."

"If might starts to make right again, if bigger countries can violate international law without consequences, then the whole world gets more dangerous for everyone," he added.

“Every step of the way, we have tried to work constructively and positively with India,” Trudeau continued. “This is not a fight we want to be having right now, but we will unequivocally, always stand up for the rule of law, because that’s who Canada is.”
