video thumbnail
Dr Kalyan Kumar Chakravarty, a former IAS Officer & a Harvard Doctorate has long been an advocate for safeguarding culture, art and communities endemic to India. He led a movement for taking museums out to communities, to help them nurse their habitats and knowledge systems. He believes that only by engaging communities actively and taking art and cultural institutions out of periodic exhibitions, he believes that tribal communities in the country can confidently bridge the gap between and build relations among communities, cultures, disciplines ,and nations. Dr. Kalyan Kumar Chakravarty is a retired IAS officer, known for his extensive field work and published work on art history, rock art, archaeology, anthropology, community knowledge systems, ecological issues, museum movement, and other areas of cultural studies. He holds a Ph.D. in Art History from Harvard University, U.S.A, and has held the charge of developmental and cultural sectors in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, where he deployed his knowledge of forest-based tribal communities to improve their economy and reduce insurgency in Chhattisgarh. He has also headed various national cultural and educational organizations such as National Museums at Delhi and Bhopal, Lalit Kala Akademi, and the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
