2015 Hyundai i30 Series II Review : Australian launch

video thumbnail
Australians buy more Hyundai i30s than any other nation on Earth – so the updated 2015 Hyundai i30 Series II is kind of a big deal.
The i30 is the company’s biggest selling model – Hyundai sold 31,505 examples in 2014, and has already sold 6316 to the end of March 2015. Indeed, it’s the country’s third-best selling small car behind the Toyota Corolla and Mazda 3.

For this 2015 Series II mid-life update, the South Korean small hatchback has seen some major revisions, including a revised model line-up. Read our Hyundai i30 Series II pricing and specifications story here. http://www.caradvice.com.au/347191/2015-hyundai-i30-series-ii-pricing-and-specifications/

"The Hyundai i30 has been updated for 2015 with the new series 2 model bringing new technology and a revised look. The exterior changes aren't huge but you will notice that there's a new look grill and new wheel designs.

Not a lot has changed inside the cabin of the i30 except in the base models, you get a new 5-inch touchscreen media system which doubles as a reverse-view camera display. That's standard across the range. There's also in the top-spec models, new ventilated seats which help keep it cool. In the back, there's adequate space for three passengers and the boot remains one of the best in its class.

But one of the most important changes to the new i30 is what's under the bonnet. There's a revised 1.6 liter turbo diesel with a new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Let's see what it's like. The new 1.6 has extra power and extra torque, 4 kilowatts and 40 newton meters to be precise, and you do notice it when you put your foot down. Part of it though comes down to the 7-speed dual-clutch which does an excellent job of shifting through the gears on the run and even at low speeds. There is some of that low speed hesitation still, but it's never interruptive of the drive experience. Hyundai Australia has re-tuned the suspension for the i30 and it does feel a little bit firmer than we recall in the previous model. It's more of a focus on control of the body over the bumps. So you do notice, a few of the smaller bumps coming through into the cabin. But it does recover well you hit a big bump.

The steering has also been improved as part of the re-tune. It feels more direct and definitely a little bit more involving than the previous model. The diesel engine ambles along nicely at highway speeds and even in 7th gear, at about 65k's an hour, it will cruise along at a thousand RPM. But when you do need to go quick, it will push pretty hard. There's a reason the Hyundai i30 is the brands best-selling car in Australia. It's good at pretty much everything, and the new diesel DCT combination makes it even better."
