How does urban design shape how we experience the city? While some features are meant to guide us, provide accessibility or keep us safe, others are meant to exclude. Defensive urban design, also known as hostile, unpleasant, or exclusive architecture guides or restricts peoples' behaviour in urban space as a way to maintain “orderly” urban environments. By uncovering exclusive and often hidden design strategies, Cara hopes to inspire people to advocate for the creation of more inclusive public spaces.
