Ramadoss urges Stalin not to hold talks with Kerala CM for a new Mullaperiyar dam
CHENNAI: PMK leader S Ramadoss on Wednesday urged Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin not to hold talks with Kerala chief minister for a new Mullaperiyar dam. The Tamil Nadu government should speed up measures to strengthen the baby dam to raise water storage to the full reservoir level of 152 feet. In a statement, the PMK leader recalled Kerala minister K Krishnankutty’s statement in the assembly on Tuesday that the state government had decided to hold a CM-level talk in December on building a new dam. “It has become a practice for Kerala to invite Tamil Nadu for talks for a new dam whenever the state suffers a setback. Solution has already been found for Mullaperiyar dam. Kerala’s invite is to infuse new life to the problem,” Ramadoss said, while urging Tamil Nadu never to fall in “deceit trap” of Kerala to snatch away its rights. Pointing to the failure of tripartite talks of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and chief ministers M Karunanidhi and V S Achuthanandan and subsequently between ministers S Duraimurugan and N K Premachandran after Supreme Court order in 2006 to raise water level to 142ft, Ramadoss said Kerala’s latest move was only to restrain Tamil Nadu from raising its storage and to infuse life for new dam plan. The Supreme Court found the dam safe in 2014 and permitted Tamil Nadu to raise water level to 142 feet and later to 152 feet after strengthening of baby dam. The storage could not be raised to 152 feet even after a lapse of seven years of judgment. Kerala continued to obstruct strengthening of the baby dam for this reason only, the PMK leader alleged. He said the supervisory committee appointed by the Supreme Court had directed Kerala government to permit Tamil Nadu to fell 15 trees. The Kerala government had frozen its order, but permission had to be granted soon.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Opposition leader V D Satheesan said the decision to permit Tamil Nadu to fell trees came to light soon after a TN ministerial delegation visited the dam and said steps would be taken to raise the water level to 152ft once the baby dam is strengthened. "The minister claims that he was clueless about such an order from the PCCF and the chief wildlife warden, but the Tamil Nadu chief minister was promptly informed. If the minister has no idea about what is going on in his department, he is not eligible to continue in his post," he said. Satheesan said the tree-felling decision was taken on November 1 at a meeting held in the chamber of the additional chief secretary (water resources), who is also the state's representative in the supervisory committee on Mullaperiyar appointed by the Supreme Court. The state would have been in an embarrassing position in the Supreme Court if the decision, which was kept a secret by the state government, was not publicised by Tamil Nadu, he said. The opposition also demanded an explanation from the chief minister as the matter pertained to an inter-state water dispute but he refused to make any comment. Speaker M B Rajesh denied permission for the adjournment motion on the basis of the minister's explanation, following which the opposition staged a walkout.
