Jack Ma is one of the most successful and well-known businessmen in the world. His story is full of failure and determination and few in the business world match his charisma.

Jack Ma was born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China in the year 1964.

He applied to and got rejected for 30 different jobs including KFC when it was first opened in his hometown of Hangzhou. In early 1995, he went to the United States of America and created a website about China along with his friend. The same day he received calls from some Chinese investors for his website and he knew that the internet had something great to offer. He started another company with the domain name, chinapages.com. Within 3 years he made $800,000 for the company.

Starting Alibaba

From the year 1989 to 1990, Jack Ma headed an IT company following which he quit and returned to Hangzhou with his team. Then along with 18 friends he founded Alibaba, a business to business marketplace site in his apartment. By January 2000, Alibaba received $25 million twice in the form of foreign venture capital investment.

This was to be an e-commerce platform for Chinese businesses, especially small and medium sized ventures. Yahoo invested $1 billion in Alibaba after its rapid growth. Jack Ma was in the Top 10 Most Respected Entrepreneurs in China according to Forbes China in 2009.

By 2014, Alibaba was raising over 25 million dollars in the New York Stock Exchange. That year, Forbes listed him as the 30th Most Powerful Person in the World.

His net worth is estimated to be $35.6 billion today. He acts as a global ambassador for Chinese businesses and is considered a role model for start up businesses. Jack Ma has also been featured on the Fortune list for 'World's 50 Greatest Leaders' at second position.

Daniel Zhing has succeeded Jack Ma this year as executive chairman of Alibaba after his retirement from the company.
