The third meeting of the Pain Management Best Practices Inter-Agency Task Force will be held on Thursday, May 9, and Friday, May 10, 2019, in the Hubert H. Humphrey Building, Great Hall, 200 Independence Avenue, S.W., Washington, D.C., 20201. During the public meeting, the Task Force will discuss and vote on the final recommendations for updates to best practices and issues that address gaps or inconsistencies for managing chronic and acute pain. External stakeholders will present implementation and dissemination efforts. The public will provide oral and written public comments. The Task Force is required under section 101 of the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2016 (CARA). The Task Force is governed by the provisions of the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA), Public Law 92-463, as amended (5 U.S.C. App), which sets forth standards for the formation and use of advisory committees.

In August 2017, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) informed the public, through the Federal Register, of its intent to establish the Pain Management Best Practices Inter-Agency Task Force as required by Section 101 of the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2016 (P.L. 114-198) (CARA). The HHS requested nominations of individuals representing specific Federal agencies and non-federal individuals and entities who represent diverse disciplines and views. The Pain Management Best Practices Inter-Agency Task Force is responsible for recommending and advising on best practices for pain management and prescribing pain medication, and proposing a strategy for disseminating such best practices to relevant Federal agencies and the general public.
