Boris Johnson said the UK and its allies would respond to Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine with a "massive" package of sanctions designed to “hobble the Russian economy".

Speaking in an address to the nation on Thursday, the Prime Minister said the world could not allow the freedom of Ukraine to be “snuffed out” and vowed political leaders “will not just look away”.

A “vast” invasion is underway in Ukraine by land, sea and air which will inflict a “tidal wave of violence,” Mr Johnson warned.
