video thumbnail
Organised by Herne Hill Harriers and Tooting Run Club in association with King's College London, this talk is aimed at middle and long distance athletes, their coaches and parents, and those with an interest in human physiology.

Speakers
Dr Richard Blagrove is a Senior Lecturer at Loughborough University and is the Programme Leader for the MSc Strength and Conditioning. His research interests focus on the physiology of endurance running, and particularly how strength-based exercises can improve running. He has published widely in the field and in 2015 published what, for many, has become a seminal works 'Strength and Conditioning for Endurance Runners'

Richard’s talk explains why strength training is important for endurance runners of all ages and abilities from a performance and an injury perspective. He will also provide an introduction to strength exercises that are suitable for both gym- and home-based settings for runners.

Becky Lyne, graduated with First Class honours in Sports Science at Loughborough University, She became an outstanding 800m athlete, ranking third at the time on the UK all time and winning a bronze medal at the European Championships, as well as winning British Championships. Capitalising on her experience and knowledge, Becky has launched two companies which have a central focus on physical activity and movement. Gracefull Running Ltd focusses on key biomechanical elements which aim to improve running form and technique.

Humans are designed to run. But, due to our more sedentary lifestyles and cushioned trainers, it is an art that we have increasingly lost touch with.

In this talk you will learn about 5 of the key biomechanical principles that form the human blueprint for movement, with clear cues and drills to help embed an optimally efficient form. In doing so you will also dispel a number of potentially harmful myths.

Chair
Professor Steve Harridge is Professor of Human and Applied Physiology at King's College London. Steve is a former junior international 400m hurdler and has a range of research interests including performance amongst masters' athletes, and is Editor in Chief of the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports.
