Varanasi Dhrupad Mela: the Vichitra Veena: Alap and Jor sections, by Dr Sanjay Verma. 1 March 2022 |
|
The Vichitra Veena, played by Dr. Sanjay Verma, on 1 March 2022 at the annual Dhrupad Mela in Tulsi Ghat, Varanasi, India. This contains parts one and two: the Alap and the Jor. The third part, the Jhala, is in a separate video, here: https://youtu.be/fyI1hdWrddQ
For non-specialists: the Dhrupad is a very traditional form of Hindustani Sangeet. This begins with two sections, one very slow and free, the alap. This is followed by a faster but not yet fully metered section, called the jor. The piece finishes with a faster third section, the jhala, where the soloist plays with a drum accompanist. The Jhala is in a seperate video. Due to the weather this time of year (hot in the day, cold at night), the pakhavaj (drum) was dropping out of tune quickly, so they paused between the jor and the jhala to tune. |
