We Need to Talk About Menstruation | Henriette Ceyrac | TEDxYangon |
|
Lack of sexual education and cultural barriers mean most Myanmar girls grow up not knowing about their own bodies. Menstruation becomes a dirty word and because girls are taught to believe it is dirty, they end up believing they are dirty too. Henriette dispels the myths in this powerful, funny talk and highlights why it is so important to talk about mensuration. Hailing from France, Henriette moved to Myanmar two years ago. While living in Myanmar and travelling around the country, she realized the vast majority of Myanmar’s 15 million women of reproductive age lack basic knowledge and safe equipment to manage their menstruation, and that the local socio-cultural norms around menstruation are harmful to their mental health and self-esteem. She founded social enterprise Pan Ka Lay in 2018, with the aim of equipping girls and women with education, products and positive values around menstruation. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
