About 500 years ago, the founder of Jikishinkage Ryū, Matsumoto Izen-no-Kami Kinomasamoto, mixed together the “Kashima” Daitō swordsmanship from Kantō with the strong points of Kurama Ryū from Kansai, at the end of the Muromachi period (1336－1573). He founded a new style called Kashima Shinden Shinkage Ryū. The seventh headmaster of the school, Yamada Heizaemon Fujiwara Mitsunori, considering carefully the history of the school, decided to rename it Jikishinkage Ryū when he got his position. Since the school has been known by that name until now, Yamada is sometimes considered the founder of the school.
