About the Book

Bram Stoker is the author of the novel Dracula, which was first published in 1897. Since this is an epistolary novel, the story is told through a series of letters, entries from a diary, and pieces from the newspaper. Although there is no clear protagonist throughout the story, it begins with a man named Jonathan Harker, a solicitor, going on a business trip to stay at the castle of a nobleman from Transylvania named Count Dracula. After Harker discovers that Dracula is a vampire and flees the castle, the Count relocates to England and begins to terrorise the town of Whitby, which is located along the coast. Dracula is tracked down and ultimately put to death by a small band of individuals commanded by Abraham Van Helsing.

The majority of Dracula was written around the 1890s. Stoker compiled more than one hundred pages of notes for the novel, drawing heavily from the history and folklore of Transylvania. There is substantial debate regarding the claim that the character of Dracula was influenced by historical persons such as the Wallachian prince Vlad the Impaler or the countess Elizabeth Báthory. However, some academics have put forward the hypothesis that this was the case. Both figures are not included in Stoker's notes. While he was on vacation in Whitby, he went to the public library and discovered the name Dracula there. He chose the name because he believed it meant "demon" in Romanian.

After its release, Dracula was met with favourable reviews from critics, many of whom praised the book for its deft handling of the horror genre. Reviewers who had a poor opinion of the book, on the other hand, found it to be an extremely terrifying read. It is often compared to other works of Gothic fiction, especially Wilkie Collins' The Woman in White due to the structural similarities between the two works (1859). Over the course of the last century, Dracula has come to be regarded as a work of Gothic literature. Scholars of the modern age investigate the novel by situating it within the historical period in which it was written, the Victorian era, and evaluate the work's portrayal of gender roles, sexuality, and race.

One of the most well-known works of literature to have originated in the English language is called Dracula. Many of the book's characters have made their way into popular culture in the form of archetypal representations of their respective characters. For instance, Count Dracula has become the paradigmatic vampire, and Abraham Van Helsing has become the prototypical vampire hunter as a result of this book. The book, which is now considered to be in the public domain, has been converted into film more than thirty times, and the characters from the book have made countless cameos in practically all forms of media.
