Julius Caesar led the Roman armies in the Gallic Civil Wars. He then became ruler of Rome from 49 BC until his assassination on March 15, 44 BC. Julius Caesar played an important role in the events that led to the revolution transforming Rome from a republic to an empire. Julius Caesar, along with his allies Pompey the Great and Marcus Crassus, formed the first triumvirate that existed in the last period of the history of the Roman Republic, specifically in the year 60 BC, and which dominated Roman politics for several years. Julius Caesar won a series of Gallic Wars that extended until 51 BC and included a large number of Roman lands, and Caesar then became one of the most powerful politicians in the Roman Republic. During this time, Julius Caesar invaded Britain and built a bridge across the Rhine River. These achievements strengthened Caesar's position and defeated Pompey the Great, who had belonged to the Senate after the death of Marcus Crassus in 53 BC. Once the Gallic Wars were over, the Senate ordered Caesar to relinquish military command and return to Rome, but Caesar openly defied authority in 49 BC and crossed the Rubicon River and marched on Rome with his army, starting a civil war that ended in victory in 45 BC. |
