Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, is a novel written by English author Mary Shelley about the eccentric scientist Victor Frankenstein, who creates a grotesque creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. Shelley began writing the story when she was eighteen, and the novel was published when she was twenty. The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818. Shelley's name appears in the second edition, published in France in 1823.

Shelley traveled through Europe in 1814, traveling along the Rhine River in Germany, with a stop in Gernsheim, just 17 km (10 miles) from Frankenstein Castle, where two centuries earlier an alchemist had been employed in experiments. She later traveled to the Geneva region (Switzerland) - where much of the story takes place - and the topics of galvanism and other similar occult ideas were topics of conversation between her companions, especially her boyfriend and future husband Percy Shelley. . Mary, Percy, Lord Byron and John Polidori decided to run a contest to see who could write the best horror story. After thinking for days, Shelley dreamed of a scientist who created life and was horrified by what she had done; her dream later evolved into the story of the novel.

Frankenstein is imbued with elements of the Gothic novel and the Romantic movement and is also considered to be one of the earliest examples of science fiction. Brian Aldiss argued that the first true sci-fi story should be considered because, unlike previous stories with fantasy elements similar to those in later SF, the central character "makes a deliberate decision" and "moves on to modern experiments. in the lab ”for fantastic results. He had a considerable influence on popular literature and culture and gave birth to a complete genre of horror stories, films and plays. (Abstract adapted from Wikipedia.org)
