WHANGAREI CITY
Join me for a brief visit to Whangarei. One of New Zealand’s most beautiful city. In order to view the whole city, I went up one of the mountain near the city centre which is called Mount Parihaka, it is an ancient volcano and said to be once the largest fortified pā in New Zealand. I drove to the top via Memorial Drive, parked there then walked a flight of stairs to get to the viewing platform. Mt Parihaka Lookout had great scenic views of Whangarei city and harbour.

HISTORY
Many stories involving the Whangārei Harbour involve the legendary chief Manaia. Whangārei was traditionally an important location for trade during much of pre-European.

Captain James Cook and the crew of the Endeavour were the first Europeans to sight the Whangārei Harbour entrance. On 15 November 1769 they caught about a hundred fish in the harbour.

In 1964, Whangārei was declared a city. Its population the following year was 31,000 and today is about 54,900
