United ended the summer transfer window with only three new players added to a team that also saw several big names leave Old Trafford. Solskjaer had hoped that after finishing sixth in the Premier League last season he would be able to bring in the necessary reinforcements to help United progress this season. United did break the transfer record for a defender when they signed Harry Maguire from Leicester City for £80million and while they also spent £50m on right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace, the only attacking addition to the squad came in the form of Daniel James from Championship side Swansea. While Maguire and Wan-Bissaka are expected to drastically reduce the 54 goals United conceded in the league last season - their highest total in 40 years - there are positions in Solskjaer’s current squad that appear to need strengthening.
