In the panel discussion, Canterbury University History Professor Philippa Mein Smith painted a picture of New Zealand, linked to Britain, immersed in the Pacific and part of Australasia. Linguist Elizabeth Gordon explained how migration from the South-East of England has influenced our accent, revealing New Zealand is the only country in the world where the evolution of our accent has been recorded. Meanwhile, Maoritanga consultant Amster Reedy explored the impact of Maori migration to New Zealand.
