In the panel discussion, Canterbury University History Professor Philippa Mein Smith painted a picture of New Zealand, linked to Britain, immersed in the Pacific and part of Australasia. Linguist Elizabeth Gordon explained how migration from the South-East of England has influenced our accent, revealing New Zealand is the only country in the world where the evolution of our accent has been recorded.
