Finland officially joins NATO as Sweden hopes for ratification |

Finland will officially join NATO on Tuesday, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said, in a move that will make both Finland and the alliance safer. However, Stoltenberg said the move to welcome Finland “should not leave the impression that Sweden is left alone.”
The announcement came four days after Turkey’s parliament approved a bill allowing Finland to join NATO, clearing the way for the country to become part of the western defence alliance as war rages in Ukraine. “With Finland as a full member, that will further increase Sweden’s security and also further integrate Sweden into NATO because Finland are so closely integrated already,” Stoltenberg said. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said on Friday, after Turkey cleared the way for Finland to join the alliance, that he hoped his country would join NATO at the summit in Vilnius in July but added there were “no guarantees.” Finland and Sweden asked to join NATO last year in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
