This Band Was So ICONIC...They INTRODUCED the 80s to the 80s! | Professor of Rock

video thumbnail
Coming up next, we're covering Duran Duran, the band that epitomized the 80s. In fact, you couldn’t really call the 80s the 80s without these guys, the identity of the 80s is wrapped up in this band. Duran Duran made a revolutionary music video for Hungry Like the Wolf that was initially rejected by American audiences. But the timing was perfect because MTV was a fledgling channel and when the two came together it was a match made in heaven… Even now the question has to be asked, did Duran Duran make MTV or did MTV make Duran Duran? Hungry Like the Wolf was a modern-day take on Little Red Riding Hood, mixed with one of the band members’ girlfriend’s iconic laugh. This song really didn’t gel until it was remixed with a rock edge. Find out the story of a classic next on Professor of Rock.

Today, we’re on the hunt for the story behind a legendary British band who got absolutely no love in America when they first hit. they were Held hostage by derelict DJs and narrow-minded tastemakers… It’s hard to believe now but these guys were in danger of fading into complete obscurity... At least on this side of the Atlantic. Could anything change their fortunes? Well it just so happened that an upstart tv network who had a crazy idea and this iconic band became the guniea pig.. would the experiment work. Let’s see... NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

So, it’s time for another installment of our show Breakthrough. In this show, we break down songs, albums, or events that kicked open the door to an artist or band’s career... And really gave them the drive to achieve long-term success. On previous episodes we have covered Boys Don’t Cry by The Cure, West End Girls by the Pet Shop Boys, and Do You Believe in Love by Huey Lewis and the News. Today we are diving deep into Duran Duran’s 1982 pop smash Hungry Like the Wolf For this period in Duran history the cast includes the golden era line-up of Simon Le Bon on vocals, Nick Rhodes on keyboards, and the trio of Taylors... Andy on guitar, John on bass, and Roger on drums.

When Duran Duran released their second album Rio in May 1982, it didn’t take long for it to become a worldwide hit. It broke into the top of the charts in several countries, going to #3 in Finland, #2 in the UK and New Zealand, and #1 in Australia and Canada. Back on British soil three of its singles went Top 10. And much of the rest of the world would follow suit. For these British sonic sophomores, everything was going according to plan... everything, except for one not-so-minor detail. All their efforts to break out in the US were a bust at that point.

Back in 1981, when Duran Duran released to their self-titled debut, Americans virtually ignored it. Not only did it fail to chart on the Billboard Top 200, it also failed to produce any Hot 100 singles.
