As an introduction to kicking in Wing Chun, we look at what is often the first move that students learn - knees up or "tai sut". When done properly, this action effectively guards your groin and supporting leg against an opponent's kick, however it is not purely defensive and like all Wing Chun movements, has an offensive element as well.

In this video we look at what Wing Chun kicks have in common with hand techniques, as well as the one key difference between the two. Lastly, we look in more detail at the "knees up" technique, and what you should focus on when doing it for proper structure and power. Despite it's name, you should NOT focus on raising the knee. Instead, with your tailbone tucked in and spine straight, you rotate your whole leg structure from your standing position and I demonstrate the difference between it correctly that way and trying to use your leg muscles to produce power against an opponent.
