We need a great deal of willpower to voluntarily do things we find uncomfortable, even if we know those things will bring us back from the depths of addiction and depression. If our finite supply of willpower is used up, we fall back on our habits. Or, as the the Greek poet Archilochus (and the Navy Seals) say: “We don’t rise to the level of our expectations, we fall to the level of our training.”
