Elon Musk Tesla showcased that its Optimus humanoid robot has achieved remarkable levels of humanlike dexterity and mobility. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), the Austin, Texas-based company provided a brief glimpse of Optimus delicately handling eggs from a carton.

The latest iteration of the robot boasts hands with an impressive 11 degrees of freedom (DoF), accompanied by tactile sensors embedded in each finger.

The accompanying video details the evolution of the robot, progressing from Bumblebee in September 2022 to Optimus Gen 1 in March 2023, and finally to Gen 2 this month. Tesla highlighted key features, including in-house-designed actuators and sensors, a 2-DoF neck, and integrated electronics and harnessing for its actuators.

Furthermore, the company outlined notable enhancements, such as a 30% increase in walking speed, the incorporation of force/torque sensing, and the addition of articulated toe sections in its feet, emphasizing a departure from the digitigrade legs and feet seen in some other robots. Interestingly, Tesla emphasized the integration of "human foot geometry."

Additionally, Tesla reported a significant 10 kg (22 lb.) reduction in the overall weight of the humanoid, a development with implications for energy consumption, cost-effectiveness, and safety. The company asserted that this weight reduction contributes to improved balance, a claim supported by a demonstration of squat thrusts in the video. Notably, it remained unclear from the footage whether the system was being teleoperated.
