Dominic Raab resigns as deputy prime minister following bullying report

Dominic Raab has resigned as deputy prime minister this morning, warning that allegations of bullying against him will set a “dangerous precedent” for ministers.

Raab indicated that Adam Tolley KC’s inquiry had upheld claims of bullying made by civil servants but said that the “threshold for bullying” had been set “so low”. Tolley was investigating at least eight formal complaints made about Raab’s behaviour at three different departments.

His departure is a blow to Rishi Sunak, who loses his third cabinet minister to scandal in just six months as prime minister.

Raab had been a leading supporter of Sunak’s leadership campaign. The prime minister must now appoint a new justice secretary and may also choose to designate a new minister as his number two.
