video thumbnail
Performing artist Serati Maseko uses an eco-feminist lens to interrogate the dual oppressions of human beings and nature, and the effects of nature deprivation in urban areas. Utilising music and storytelling, she takes us on a journey of her own discovery and invites us to reimagine the ways that we interact with the non-human natural world. Serati Maseko is a multidisciplinary artist and activist from Johannesburg, she uses the mediums of music, poetry, stage performance and writing to communicate ideas, explore the human condition, express emotion, and to hold a mirror to humanity. Born in Alexandra Township in Johannesburg, her upbringing was divided between different parts of Johannesburg, Boston Massachusetts, and London, England. In early 2022 her article titled ‘’Democratising Nature’’ was published in Daily Maverick. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
