Social Media: Rise of the Incel Culture and Climate Change Nihilism | Yuni Kim | TEDxYouth@TCIS

video thumbnail
Yuni argues that overexposure to content and the constant consumption of negative news on social media are contributing to a sense of hopelessness and despair among people, leading to an increase in these two subcultures. She proposes two ways to deal with this phenomenon: cutting down screen time and adopting optimistic nihilism. She involves spending less time on the internet, while the latter involves a shift in thinking towards appreciating the beauty of life despite its inherent meaninglessness. My name is Yuni Kim, and I am a senior in TCIS. As an activist, I love questioning what role each piece of society plays in perpetuating injustices. I am especially invested in understanding how social media impacts modern society, and especially the philosophical perception of generation Zs. I hope to unpack the pressing role of online interaction through my talk. Other than that, I also love music, art, poetry, science, and philosophy. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
