Sweden's King Carl Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel and Prince Carl Philip attended Saturday's banquet - a Nobel tradition, along with other guests. Winners in literature, physics, chemistry and economics received their awards from Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf during a lavish ceremony on Friday. During his speech at Stockholm City Hall, Ei-ichi Negishi, co-winner of the chemistry prize, spoke of his delight at receiving the award, which he shares with fellow Japanese researcher Akira Suzuki and US Richard Heck. The prize was awarded for their work in designing techniques to bind together carbon atoms. Also speaking at the banquet was Mario Vargas Llosa, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. The awards were established by Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel - the inventor of dynamite - and are handed out on December 10, the anniversary of his death in 1896. The Nobel Peace Prize ceremony was held in Oslo, Norway, also on December 10.
