In the near future, the world is devastated by an artificial intelligence called Skynet, which became self-aware and initiated a nuclear holocaust, leading to the rise of intelligent machines known as Terminators. The remaining humans, led by John Connor, fight for survival against the machines.

The film begins with a Terminator (T-800 Model 101) being sent back in time by the resistance to protect a young John Connor (Edward Furlong) from an advanced and deadly Terminator, the T-1000 (Robert Patrick), also sent back in time by Skynet to kill John and prevent him from becoming a threat to its existence.

Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), John's mother, who has been preparing for the future war against the machines, has been institutionalized for her warnings about the coming apocalypse. She escapes from the mental hospital to protect her son, but she believes the T-800 is also a threat. After a tense confrontation, Sarah and the T-800 reach an uneasy alliance to safeguard John.
