The new XBB.1.5 Omicron subvariant is rapidly spreading across parts of the US. It’s the most transmissible subvariant of SARS-CoV-2 to date and is also highly immune evasive. The good news is that it doesn’t cause more severe disease than other variants and the current bivalent booster vaccines designed against the original Omicron parent strain should offer protection against XBB.1.5, according to preliminary data.
