Karate is a martial art developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom, Okinawa. It developed from the indigenous Ryukyuan martial arts under the influence of Chinese Kenpo and in initial days it was called "Te" means "Hand".

The Ryukyu Kingdom was annexed by Japan in 1879 and Karate was introduced to Japan in the early 20th century by Supreme Master Gichin Funakoshi and It was systematically taught in Japan after the Taishō era.

In 1917, Master Funakoshi gives the first public demonstration of karate-do.

In 1922, the Japanese Ministry of Education invited Master Gichin Funakoshi to Tokyo to give a karate demonstration.

In 1924, Keio University established the first university karate club in mainland Japan.

Because of increasing Japanese influence, the label of "Te" (Hand) was eventually lengthened to "Karate-Jutsu" (Chinese Hand Art).

It then changed to "Karate-Do" after an Okinawan master altered the meaning of the word "Kara" to mean “Empty” rather than “Chinese”.

Karate-do translates into
"The Way Of The Empty Hand”

1930s: Karate makes its way to Canada.

1939: Japan opens Shoto-Kan, its first formal training school.

held in Tokyo.

In 1957: A new form of Karate called "Kyokushin" was
formally founded by Master Masutatsu Oyama.
Kyokushin is now often called
"Full Contact Karate" or "Knockdown Karate"

In 1994: The JKA published the first in a series of five authoritative
text-books on kata.
This series is also called the “bible” of karate kata.

Karate is divided into style organizations but The World Karate Federation (WKF) is the largest sport karate organization with 188 member countries and is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The styles recognised by the WKF are Gōjū-ryū, Shitō-ryū, Shotokan and Wadō-ryū.
