PFAS (Forever Chemicals) are a major health risk!
Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are chemicals used in the production of non-stick surfaces ranging from Teflon pans to fast food wrappers and dental floss. Between 1951 and 2003 DuPont alone has produced an estimated 800 tons of these non-degradable chemicals. They are present in our soil, water and air, as well as in our bodies. They have been linked to cancer, liver disease, infertility, and thyroid disease. Aside from decreasing our consumption of products containing these chemicals, we need to be cautious with our drinking water, as this may be heavily contaminated with PFAS. Reverse osmosis filters (RO) have shown to be very effective in removing these chemicals. Your local department of water and power publishes an annual report in which they show the water quality including possible contaminants. This is a good place to start to check your the levels of PFAS in the tap water of your region. https://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlehtml/2020/em/d0em00291g https://setac.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/etc.4935 https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.est.6b05005 https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0013935118305577 https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0160412019305380 https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0300483X20302043 https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.est.1c03386 https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.est.0c06978 |
