But once that period is over, they hit the road and leave the seal pup alone on the ice as if it never existed! This makes it unusually difficult for the baby to survive, especially because they aren’t ready to swim until at least they’re eight weeks old. As a result, their only goal is to try and not get eaten – not exactly what you call a charming life. That probably explains why around one-third of all baby seals end up dying in their first year of life. Hooded Grebes Hooded Grebes usually lay eggs in pairs and both parents take turns incubating them. It all sounds like a great family… until the eggs actually hatch. Then the mother hooded grebe has no choice but to abandon one of the children in favor of the other! As unfair as that sounds, it’s how they work and ensure the overall well-being of the species. It’s usually the firstborn that parents favor; in fact, they often don’t even wait for the other egg to hatch before entirely abandoning it. Even if you understand that it’s their unique way of survival, it’s kind of sad when you think about it.
