Engineering response to COVID-19: Rapid re engineering of the CPAP

video thumbnail
There have been various examples of the engineering industry leading the way to support the global response to COVID-19.

The work of the team at University College London (UCL) is an example of what the engineers and medical staff can do when working together to solve problems in a crisis. They joined together with Mercedes F1 Manufacturing and the clinical team at University College Hospital (UCLH) to produce and manufacture the UCL-Ventura CPAP device in one of the most rapid responses to date.

This webinar shares their story about how they re-engineered the old Philips Respironics Whisperflow wall CPAP device into the new device prototype in just 100 hours and gained medical approval in 10 days in order to distribute 10,000 units to the NHS in just four weeks.

Hear from representatives at Mercedes F1 Manufacturing and the mechanical engineering and clinical teams at UCL about they worked together to carry out this feat in engineering.

Webinar speakers:
Professor Rebecca Shipley, Professor of Healthcare Engineering in UCL Mechanical Engineering, Vice Dean (Health) in UCL Faculty of Engineering and Director of UCL Institute of Healthcare Engineering
Professor Tim Baker, Professorial Teaching Fellow and Team Principal of UCL Racing, UCL Mechanical Engineering
Professor Mervyn Singer, Professor of Intensive Care at UCL Medicine and Intensivist at UCLH
Professor David Lomas, UCL Vice Provost (Health), Head of UCL School of Life and Medical Sciences, Head of UCL Medical School
Andy Cowell, Managing Director, Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains
