Henry David Thoreau (July 12, 1817 – May 6, 1862) was an American author, poet, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, tax resister, development critic, surveyor, historian, and leading transcendentalist. He is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay On The Duty of Civil Disobedience, his powerful argument for individual resistance to the U.S. civil government. He believed It was a moral obligation to resist all unjust goverments through refusal to pay taxes among other means. Thoreau refused to pay taxes because his money would be used to fund support slavery and unjust wars.
