CALPACT Training: Street Medicine Part 2: Act Locally Think Globally: Street Medicine from California to Haiti-Mimi Doohan MD and Neil Jayasekera MD

This training will teach the theory, skills, and practice of street medicine. Street Medicine is a practice established by Dr. Withers to provide medical care, social services, and health education to unsheltered homeless populations. The CALPACT Street Medicine Training will train participants on the delivery of services, the role of street medicine in primary care, public health, and disaster response, and program administration and development. The event will be composed of four sessions:

1. Overview of Street Medicine: Dr. Withers will present the history of Street Medicine, Operation Safety Net, and how Street Medicine has been used in cities all over the world. The documentary "One Bridge to the Next" will be used during this session.

2. Service delivery (medicine, social services, health education): Trainees will be provided with an outreach manual, and taught the basics of street encounters as well as special circumstances that may arise, and specific knowledge needed for working with homeless populations. A portion of the session will focus on medical delivery, and equipment needed for delivery.

3. Street Medicine and Community Response: Street Medicine can become an integral component of health services delivery. Trainees will learn how Street Medicine can be used under normal circumstances (primary care, public health outreach and education, and the delivery of social services). Trainees will also learn how to use Street Medicine as a tool during disaster response.

4. Beyond Delivery: This session focuses on the initiation and implementation of a Street Medicine program in the trainees' organization. Dr. Withers will focus on starting a program, linking with networks, and sustaining the program.
